Working with one of the world’s leading oil companies, Vector InfoTech and Belden have successfully applied Hirschmann™ WLAN technology to develop a tailor-made, secure and reliable plant-wide wireless process control system. That included modifications and additions to the existing Ethylene Cracker Complex (ECC) on the island of Pulau Bukom refinery.
One of the key features of the project is that this is a deployment in an Oil & Gas environment, where wireless technology is being used to get secure mobile access to the Process Control systems.
Mobile access implemented to all process data via WLAN at defined places in the refinery to drive efficiencies. Significant benefits include improved overall efficiency, resulting from both the faster commissioning time for the petrochemical process control system and improved maintenance efficiency, as well as an overall system cost reduction – due to fewer local panel units being needed.
The Complete Solutions
By successfully delivering this project, Vector InfoTech and Belden has demonstrated the capabilities to offer a complete solution for scalable, redundant industrial LAN and WLAN infrastructure for the process industries.
In this case, the solution encompassed an entire WLAN system with ATEX certification and full Project Management and service that has provided the customer with both improved operational efficiency and cost reductions. And, following the installation of the entire system and a successful Site Acceptance Test (SAT), Vector InfoTech and Belden will continue to work on this project, to deliver service programs and further expand the network for better WLAN coverage and new services like Ex zone certified wireless video for safety and surveillance applications.
